AI startup Fal doubles valuation to $16 billion as demand grows

Dataist Dataist

The San Francisco startup Fal, which runs models for generating video, images and audio, raised $1.3 billion in a funding round led by Bessemer Venture Partners. Participants included Nvidia, Sound Ventures and T. Rowe Price. Bloomberg reports that Fal is now valued at $16 billion, twice its April valuation of $8 billion. The company also announced Series E and Series F rounds, which together raised $1.65 billion.

Why the valuation is rising

The new Series F round comes amid growing demand for inference services — running an already trained model to produce an answer or another result. Companies working with open models are especially active users of these services.

Earlier this year, Fal’s annualized revenue topped $800 million, Bloomberg reports.

Other inference providers are also growing quickly: Baseten, Fireworks AI and Modal. They, too, are raising large rounds at higher valuations. But their gross margins remain low: computing capacity is expensive to buy or rent, several people familiar with the financial performance of inference companies told Bloomberg.

Fal’s founders

Fal was founded in 2021 by Burkay Gur and Gorkem Yurtseven. Before that, Gur led machine learning at Coinbase and worked as an engineer at Oracle. Yurtseven was a developer at Amazon.

Dataist’s take: Fal’s valuation reflects growing demand for running models, but the amount of investment raised does not erase the cost of computing capacity. The high expense of buying or renting equipment remains a constraint on the economics of these services.
