Airbnb adds AI search, but conversion remains the test

Airbnb is adding AI-assisted search and a map of friends’ trips to its app, alongside a wider set of travel services. The changes extend features the company has been building since last year, but the search launch carries a harder test than the demo: Airbnb says it must make natural-language discovery useful without hurting bookings across a platform handling $100 billion in transactions.

Search without a chatbot

Airbnb is choosing a search interface rather than a chatbot. Users will be able to switch on AI search and look for places to stay by text or voice. As they search, the app will surface filters based on their preferences. Enter “child,” for example, and it may suggest narrowing the search to a crib, playgrounds, children’s books or toys.

The AI will also highlight relevant features of listings. For properties saved to a wishlist, it will generate short descriptions and reviews to help users compare options.

CEO Brian Chesky told TechCrunch that Airbnb is just starting to roll out AI search and plans to iterate quickly over the coming months. Building the search itself is not the hard part, he said; the challenge is making sure it does not reduce conversion. Anyone can build a search feature with natural-language programming, Chesky said, but preserving conversion is difficult.

The fall update also expands services introduced last year. Airbnb will add food delivery, laundry, and rentals of baby supplies, skis and boats in some locations. Grocery delivery will become more widely available.

Turning trips into a social feed

Airbnb is extending the social network it added to the app last year, when users gained the ability to connect with friends and other travelers. A new trip map will show those connections’ past and upcoming trips. Tapping a trip reveals where someone stayed and which experiences they chose.

Users who do not want to share their travel plans can opt out. The feature points toward a broader goal: encouraging people to travel more often and book additional experiences, such as food tastings and craft workshops.

The company is also building neighborhood pages from guest reviews and other sources, with recommendations for places to eat and things to do nearby.

I think the more revealing detail is Chesky’s emphasis on conversion, not the novelty of searching by voice. Airbnb can add AI-generated filters and summaries, but its own account makes clear that usefulness is not the only measure: the feature must help people choose without getting in the way of a booking. The announcement does not say how Airbnb will measure that trade-off, or what happens if the new search draws attention but fails to convert it.
