From discovery to order management
The new features cover routine tasks that often require customers to navigate account settings themselves:
Amazon has also introduced an AI product-selection assistant and alerts about new products and offers this year. The new Alexa functions extend that shopping push beyond choosing what to buy and into managing what happens after an order is placed.
Usage is not the same as autonomy
Amazon says the number of users applying agentic features has grown eightfold since the start of the year. More than 400 million shoppers used Alexa for shopping over the past 12 months.
Those figures describe reach and growth, not how often customers rely on the new features or whether Alexa can carry out tasks end to end. I think that distinction matters: changing a delivery cadence is useful, but the announcement does not say how many steps Alexa handles, or when it sends the customer back to an app or account page.
The harder question is whether customers will trust Alexa with the details that make shopping assistants valuable: which item belongs on a list, how often it should arrive, and where a package should be left. Amazon has added more ways to ask. The value of the update will depend on how reliably Alexa can act on those instructions.
