Anthropic brings Claude into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

Anthropic has brought Claude directly into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, while also letting people open and edit Google files from Claude. The beta puts Claude beside the documents where many employees already work, rather than limiting it to a chat window or Drive connector. It is Anthropic’s first native integration with Google’s productivity apps, and a move into territory where Gemini already has an advantage: access to Workspace.

Work on both sides of the file

Open a Google file and Claude appears in a sidebar. It can read a document, spreadsheet or presentation, act on selected text, cells or slides, and make changes in the file. Or start in Claude: paste a Google file link or ask it to create a document, spreadsheet or presentation, then work on the result alongside the conversation. Access follows the file’s existing Google sharing permissions.

In Docs, Claude can revise sentences and headings while preserving surrounding formatting. Larger edits appear in the sidebar for review before they are applied. Anthropic’s examples include rewriting a résumé for executives and turning a list of next steps into a table in the original document.

Sheets gives the integration a more operational feel. Claude can write formulas, create pivot tables and charts, add tabs and change data. For tasks such as combining datasets or cleaning unstructured information, it can move cell ranges into Python, process them and write the result back to the spreadsheet.

In Slides, Claude can create slides using the presentation’s existing layouts and themes. It can also check for overlapping objects, content outside slide boundaries and text that is difficult to read.

Users choose how much autonomy to grant. By default, Claude asks before editing and shows proposed changes for approval. “Accept all edits” lets it handle a larger task without requesting confirmation at every step.

The contest is over the work surface

Google has already put Gemini across Workspace. In Docs, Gemini can rewrite text, adjust formatting and draw on information from Drive, Gmail, Chat and the web. In Sheets, it has moved beyond answering questions and writing formulas toward building tables and handling sequences of tasks in existing files.

Microsoft is taking a similar path with Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The apps can perform multiple actions inside files, rather than just generate text for users to copy over. Microsoft says Copilot in Excel can change sheets, cells, formatting, pivot tables, formulas and charts.

There is an unusual wrinkle: Microsoft says Copilot’s AI-agent editing features use Anthropic models. Anthropic is therefore competing with Microsoft at the application layer while supplying models for some of its rival’s features.

Anthropic already offers Claude in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The Google integration extends that push to both major workplace ecosystems. Claude for Word, Excel and PowerPoint is available on paid plans; Claude for Outlook remains in beta.

Claude’s other tools come along for the ride. The Workspace add-on supports the same models, connectors and skills available in other Claude interfaces. Anthropic’s example is a quarterly business review presentation assembled from customer history in Salesforce, call notes in Google Drive and a company workflow saved as a skill.

For enterprise customers, Anthropic says the add-on also supports the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and audit-log exports through OpenTelemetry. The beta is available on all paid Claude plans, including Enterprise. Administrators can deploy it across a Workspace domain or to selected groups. Direct Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors in Claude are also available to enterprise customers; on Team and Enterprise plans, an account owner or primary owner must enable them first.

There is no separate price for the Google integration; it is included in paid Claude plans.

The missing test

I think the strategic point is less that Claude can edit a spreadsheet than that Google customers no longer have to pick Gemini just because it sits closest to their files. Anthropic is trying to make its assistant available inside the workflows people already use, while relying on Google’s sharing permissions and offering enterprise controls.

What I’d want to know is how well Claude handles the messy parts of real work: whether edits preserve the intent of a document, whether spreadsheet transformations are easy to audit, and how often users need to step in. The announcement describes capabilities and controls, but offers no performance results. That leaves the central competition unresolved: the model that can act in a company’s files matters, but so does the trust required to let it.
