A relationship already under strain
The disagreement over AI is only part of the backdrop. Earlier this year, the Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company sought limits on how its technology could be used. Anthropic is challenging that decision in court, though some other administration officials have been friendlier toward the company.
The dinner is notable because the relationship has been tense even before this latest exchange. But a meeting is not a policy shift. I think the more revealing question is whether the two can discuss the limits Anthropic wants on its technology without treating those limits as a political provocation. The announcement gives no indication that the designation, or the lawsuit, is on the table.
