How the program works
According to The Information, Anthropic employees can donate company shares to charitable organizations, and Anthropic adds shares of its own. Early employees receive three times the number of shares they contribute.
From October 2025 to March 2026, the program cost Anthropic more than $660 million. The shares issued for donations dilute the stakes of other investors.
In 2025, Anthropic donated $540 million, compared with $115 million from Truist Financial and $109 million from BlackRock. Those companies ranked next among the largest corporate donors on the Fortune 500 list.
What the pledge leaves open
IPO documents say CEO Dario Amodei and six co-founders have pledged to donate at least 80% of their wealth. Many employees follow effective altruism principles, and former colleagues say they are already discussing in group chats where to direct the millions they expect to receive. Common causes include global poverty, AI safety and animal welfare.
If Anthropic’s share price keeps rising after an IPO, the total value of its donations could reach billions of dollars. I think the key uncertainty is how much of that headline figure depends on the stock’s future performance: the program’s scale is striking, but its eventual giving is tied to a valuation that has not yet been tested in public markets.
