ByteDance launches Dramagic as AI short-series demand surges

ByteDance has launched Dramagic, an AI platform designed to take short series from script to screen. The move places the company inside China’s rapidly expanding short-series market: around 128,000 projects were released in the first quarter of 2026, three times as many as during the entire previous year, and 95% were created with AI. With AI-generated video estimated at $90–120 per minute—about one-tenth the cost of traditional production—the launch is as much about production economics as software.

The market behind the launch

China’s short-series business is expanding at a pace that makes an end-to-end production platform commercially plausible. The China Association of Network Broadcasting Services counted around 128,000 projects released in the first quarter of 2026.

Professor Shen Yang of Tsinghua University estimates that one minute of AI-generated video costs $90–120, roughly a tenth of traditional production. The industry directly employs 690,000 people, making that cost reduction significant beyond the studios adopting it.

The human cost of cheaper production

I think Dramagic’s timing says more about the market’s cost structure than about a new creative workflow. ByteDance is arriving where AI is already present in nearly every short-series project, so the platform’s value will depend less on introducing AI than on making the process easier to run at scale.

That scale has a darker edge. Reports say some performers are forced to hand over their voices and physical likenesses to AI tools before being dismissed. The unanswered issue is how platforms such as Dramagic handle consent and ownership when the cheapest production model also makes the people on screen easier to remove.
