ChatGPT back to 55.5% of web traffic as Gemini's comeback fades

ChatGPT has won back 55.5% of web traffic among AI assistants, ending a twelve-month slide in its share. Gemini and Claude both gained ground over the same period while the rest of the field stayed flat, and Gemini's recent push at closing the gap has run out of momentum. The figure carries a heavy asterisk: it counts visits to websites, at a moment when both Google and OpenAI are routing a growing share of their usage through channels a web traffic panel cannot see.

Start with what is excluded. A large share of Gemini interactions probably happens inside the Android ecosystem and never registers as a site visit. Google sends push notifications that open the Gemini app directly on a finished summary rather than handing the user a web link — a design that skips the browser on purpose. OpenAI runs its own version of the same play, promoting the ChatGPT mobile app and the new ChatGPT Work desktop client, neither of which feeds into these numbers.

That makes the undercount asymmetric, and it falls hardest on the number the story turns on. If Gemini's usage is the most systematically missing from the panel, then "Gemini's comeback is fading" is the least safe conclusion available here. The Android push path is not noise at the edge of a measurement; it is a product decision taken at Google's scale, aimed at exactly the users a web panel would otherwise count.

There is a second problem, with the unit rather than the coverage. A push-delivered summary the user never asked for and a question someone sat down to type are not the same act of demand, and a traffic share does not distinguish between them. It records one as a visit, or in the Android case as nothing at all. As assistants move from being destinations to being notifications, a metric built on destinations stops describing the market it gets quoted about.

The other reading worth putting on the table is what 55.5% actually represents. This is a floor being held, not a peak being reclaimed. A year of losses followed by stabilisation is a company that stopped bleeding, and the two names taking share — Gemini and Claude — took it while everyone else went nowhere. The interesting movement in this chart is not at the top.

So the number most likely to be waved around as a scoreboard is the one both leaders have an active roadmap to render meaningless. ChatGPT's 55.5% is a real measurement of a shrinking surface, which means the next time this line moves, nobody will be able to say whether the product changed or only the plumbing did.
