Claude adds bank account analysis with Personal Finance

Dataist Dataist

Anthropic has added Personal Finance to Claude, letting users connect bank accounts and credit cards through Plaid and ask questions about their finances. Access is read-only: Claude cannot transfer, manage or invest money. The tool can group spending by category, flag duplicate charges and rising bills, and explain financial terms. The beta will begin rolling out this week to users on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the US.

How Claude analyzes spending

Users can ask Claude to calculate where their money went over the course of a month. The tool totals spending across connected accounts and sorts it into categories such as rent and utilities, food and drink, or shopping. Users can then ask whether their spending is higher than usual or whether anything important was missed.

Personal Finance also analyzes transactions and flags potential issues: duplicate charges, unexpected fees and bills that are gradually increasing. Claude can answer broader questions too, such as whether a user is spending more than they earn.

The tool also explains financial concepts, including APR, or annual percentage rate, and calculates how much the user paid in interest over the past year.

Anthropic positions Claude as an assistant that helps people understand their own spending, rather than simply offering generic advice. OpenAI added a similar feature to ChatGPT in May: the service also lets users connect financial accounts and ask about spending and long-term planning.

What data Claude can access

Anthropic says access is limited to the bank’s name, the account holder’s name and account type, the last four digits of the account number, balances, credit limits and transaction history covering up to two years. Conversations with Claude in Personal Finance are not used to train models.

According to Anthropic, responses use plain language and the service explains unfamiliar terms. Personal Finance will also have no ads or sponsored recommendations; Claude does not offer its own credit cards, loans or savings accounts.

Claude’s expansion

Personal Finance arrives as Claude expands into new areas. Earlier this year, Anthropic launched Claude for Legal and Claude for Financial Services.

Dataist’s take: the tool brings Claude closer to being an assistant that works with personal financial data, rather than only answering general questions. Access remains limited to reading, and the account information and transaction history cover a specific set of data that Anthropic has listed.
