Disruptive raises $10 billion fund to back at least 10 companies

Disruptive has raised a $10 billion fund to make large bets on at least 10 companies. It is the firm’s first blind-pool fund: investors commit capital without knowing in advance which companies will receive it. That changes how Disruptive raises money, after years of bringing in capital deal by deal, and gives the firm room to back its next investments from a single pool.

A shift in how Disruptive invests

Founded in 2012 by Alex Davis, grandson of oil magnate Marvin Davis, Disruptive has drawn attention in recent years for investments in chip startup Groq and voice-generation AI developer ElevenLabs.

Until now, the firm raised money for individual deals through special-purpose investment vehicles. The new fund is a different model: investors are backing Disruptive before its targets are known.

According to Bloomberg, Disruptive told investors it had returned more than $6 billion on roughly $1.9 billion invested in startups. That is a striking reported return, but it is not the same as a disclosed performance record for this new fund.

Dallas Business Journal reports that the fund is the largest venture fund ever created in Texas.

The unanswered question

I think the interesting tension is between the scale of the fund and the number of companies it plans to back. At $10 billion for at least 10 investments, Disruptive is positioning itself to make substantial commitments, but the announcement gives no detail on how that capital will be allocated or what kinds of companies it will pursue.

The blind pool gives the firm flexibility; it also asks investors to trust that its past picks can guide a much larger pool of capital. That is the bet behind the headline.
