Ordering without opening the app
The agent can also send photos of the dishes it recommends. That makes the exchange more than a text-based restaurant search: the user can describe what they want, review suggestions and shape an order in Messages.
DoorDash says the launch is intended to give it an edge over Uber Eats and Grubhub. It arrives as interest grows in personal AI agents that handle tasks without requiring people to open apps and websites themselves.

A chat window is not the whole experience
The company is also set to test drone delivery with select restaurants in Northern California. That is a separate effort from the Messages launch, but it points to DoorDash working on both ends of ordering: how customers place an order and how food reaches them.
I think the more consequential test is whether people will trust a chat agent to make useful choices, especially for a group with different preferences. The announcement describes recommendations, photos and order composition, but says little about how customers review or change the final order. If chat removes the friction of opening an app but leaves that uncertainty intact, the interface may be new while the hard part of ordering remains.
