Google halves Nano Banana image prices with version 2.1

Google has replaced Nano Banana 2 with Nano Banana 2.1, cutting image-generation prices by roughly half while promising improvements across the board. The new model runs on Gemini 3.6 Flash and supports output up to 4K. It is now rolling out across Google products, including the Gemini app, Google Search’s AI Mode and Google AI Studio. The lower price is the clearest change; whether the images close the gap with Google’s more capable Pro model is less settled.

A cheaper step below Pro

A 1K image now costs 3.36 cents, down from 6.70 cents for Nano Banana 2. At 4K, the price falls from 15.10 cents to 7.56 cents. Nano Banana Pro remains considerably more expensive at 13.40 cents per 1K image.

Google says version 2.1 improves visual quality, text rendering, character consistency across conversational turns, wide panoramas and infographics. It can process up to 14 reference images at once, while maintaining a consistent look for as many as four characters and ten objects. It also connects to Google Search and offers three reasoning levels — minimal, medium and high — that affect image quality.

The model’s Flash-level speed and support for 1K, 2K and 4K output position it as a more efficient alternative to Pro, as Google describes it. But the comparison is not straightforward: Nano Banana 2.1 beats Pro by a wide margin on some benchmarks, while Nano Banana 2 matches it on those same tests. In practice, Nano Banana Pro often still produces noticeably better images.

The price cut is clearer than the quality claim

Nano Banana Pro uses the latest Pro version, 3.1, while Nano Banana 2.1 runs on Gemini 3.6 Flash. Google’s announced Gemini 4 Argon Pro model may bring the next notable image-quality improvement, leaving 2.1’s role closer to a lower-cost option than a replacement for the best model.

I think the pricing is the more concrete part of this release. Google has halved the cost, but its own comparisons do not establish that 2.1 consistently matches Pro where image quality matters most. What I’d want to know is how often the cheaper model’s improvements hold up in real use, especially for text and consistent characters — areas Google says it has worked on.

The rollout is underway across the Gemini app, Google Search’s AI Mode, Google AI Studio, Flow by Google, Stitch by Google, Google Ads and Gemini Enterprise Platform. Google will shut down the previous model, gemini-3.1-flash-image, on October 29, 2026. The transition makes the cheaper model the new default path, but does not make the trade-off with Pro disappear.
