Huawei pulls Ascend 960DT forward to Q1 2027 as its SuperPoD shrinks

Huawei has moved the launch of its next AI accelerator up by two quarters. The Ascend 960DT, previously set for the third quarter of 2027, will now arrive in the first, a company representative told TechCrunch after the new schedule was announced at the Huawei Connect conference on Thursday. Huawei says the chip will deliver a twofold performance gain, that the Ascend 960 family as a whole will ship ahead of plan, and that it will be improved every year. The revision landed a week before Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are due to meet in Washington on September 24.

Huawei has moved the launch of its next AI accelerator up by two quarters. The chip is one piece of a larger argument Huawei has been making for a while: that it can compensate for whatever it lacks per die by wiring an enormous number of dies together. The company calls the approach Peerium Computing Architecture, built on UnifiedBus, its own technology for connecting processors to memory, storage and networking equipment. Eric Xu, Huawei's rotating chairman, said the architecture exists to build larger computing systems for both model training and inference.

The first systems on it are the Atlas 950 SuperPoD and the Atlas 950 SuperCluster. Huawei claims the SuperCluster will tie together up to 256,000 accelerator cards.

That is where the week gets more complicated. Rui Ma, an analyst covering the Chinese technology sector, wrote on X that Huawei had previously described the Atlas 960 SuperPoD as scaling to 15,488 Ascend 960 chips. The system described this week has 4,096. Ma's summary of the trade: the chip itself arrives considerably earlier, but the SuperPoD on show is far smaller than the configuration originally claimed.

Huawei continues to develop its own silicon despite US restrictions that limit China's access to advanced semiconductor technology. Ma does not think those measures will stop the country from building a domestic semiconductor industry; in her assessment, technological self-sufficiency matters too much to China for the attempt to work.

The pulled-in date is the part that travels, and it is the less interesting of the two numbers. A chip arriving two quarters early is a schedule claim, unverifiable until hardware exists. A SuperPoD that drops to roughly a quarter of the previously stated chip count is a claim being walked back in public, and it cuts against the one thing Huawei's pitch rests on. If scale is the answer to Nvidia, the scale figure moving down matters more than the silicon date moving up. My reading is that the binding constraint is not the die at all — it is the interconnect, the memory and the supply behind it, which is exactly the part US export controls were designed to reach.

Notably absent from the announcement: any yield or volume figure, any baseline for what the twofold performance gain is measured against, and any explanation of what happened to the 15,488-chip configuration. Nor did Huawei say whether an earlier chip means more chips or simply the same chips sooner — for a company whose architecture is premised on aggregating hundreds of thousands of accelerators, and eventually millions, those are the same question.

The timing invites the obvious reading, and Huawei did nothing to discourage it. Trump has pushed back on calls from AI executives to slow the technology down for safety reasons, arguing that the US must keep its lead over China. Xu argues the mirror image: China needs to accelerate to catch up, and, as the Financial Times reported, said Chinese companies need to get further along before they can fully understand and remove the risks of more powerful AI systems. Both sides now cite the other's speed as the reason they cannot slow down, which leaves the safety case dependent on whoever stops first. The number Huawei actually moved this week went down.
