OpenAI and Synopsys put GPT to work on chip design

Synopsys makes electronic design automation software used to design computer chips and semiconductors. OpenAI is licensing those tools for GPT-Synopsys, which will run on OpenAI’s infrastructure.

The companies say customer data will be encrypted and will not be used to train the model. The announcement does not say how much of the design work GPT-Synopsys can complete without engineers, or how the companies will measure whether it improves the process.

Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi says AI could significantly speed up chip design. OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman sees the partnership as a way to build better chips and AI.

The harder test is engineering value

OpenAI already works with Broadcom on chips designed specifically to run AI models. Its recently unveiled Jalapeno chip is highly competitive with comparable specialized chips.

That makes GPT-Synopsys more than a software partnership: it puts OpenAI closer to the tools used to design the hardware its models depend on. I think the important question is not whether the model can interact with design software, but whether engineers can trust its work enough to approve designs faster. The announcement gives no measure of that yet, leaving the product’s value to be established in customer trials.
