What the extension can do
OpenAI’s examples show the assistant comparing products across tabs by:
It can also summarize articles in plain language and compare prices from different sellers.
The conversation history now lives in the extension’s updated sidebar, next to the page a user is viewing. That makes the sidebar more than a place to start a chat: it keeps the conversation alongside the material being discussed.
The missing details
I think the interesting shift is not that ChatGPT can summarize a page, but that OpenAI is framing the browser as a workspace the assistant can operate across. The examples, though, describe comparisons and summaries; they don’t establish how reliably it handles more complex tasks or what limits apply when it acts on information from several tabs.
The announcement is quiet about those boundaries. For now, the pitch is clear: ChatGPT can use open tabs as context, while its conversation stays within reach. Whether that makes the browser feel meaningfully more useful will depend on how well the assistant handles the details users don’t want to check themselves.
