OpenAI doubles Pro plan limits as Anthropic competition intensifies

OpenAI has doubled usage limits on its Pro plans as it competes with Anthropic for business AI customers. The move comes after the company introduced its 6.1 models, Terra and Sol, which it says are substantially more efficient than their predecessors while matching or outperforming them. OpenAI is presenting the extra capacity as part of a broader effort to ship better models and make them more efficient; the announcement offers no details on the new limits.

More capacity, same unanswered question

OpenAI says it plans to keep improving model quality and efficiency to increase the capacity available to users. That is a broad promise, while the concrete change is narrower: Pro subscribers now get twice the usage limits.

The company describes Terra and Sol as markedly more efficient than earlier models, without sacrificing performance. But it does not say how those efficiency gains translate into the doubled limits, or specify which tasks and users benefit most.

Anthropic is preparing to go public, as both companies compete for leadership in business AI. OpenAI’s change therefore lands in a contest where access to model capacity is part of the product, not just a technical detail.

I think the doubling is more legible as a competitive signal than as evidence of a step-change in capability. The announcement leaves out the practical terms that would let customers judge its value: the limits before and after, and how they apply across the Pro plans. Without those, users get a bigger number—but not a clear measure of what they can now do.
