Access comes with oversight
Approved researchers can study sensitive topics, but the access is not unrestricted. For registered applications involving high sensitivity, safety reviews take the approved research context into account. OpenAI says it will contact researchers if anything remains unclear.
The company also says it does not train its models on research data by default. Application instructions are available in OpenAI’s help center.
The missing measure
The announcement describes how OpenAI will screen and monitor labs, but not what qualifies a lab for approval or how the company will judge whether the plan is working. I think that is the more consequential gap: a year of free access matters only if researchers can use it for work that would otherwise be difficult to do.
The offer pairs access to GPT-Rosalind with review of the people, institution and use case. That may reassure OpenAI about sensitive research, but it also leaves the company with a central role in deciding which research contexts count as acceptable.
