OpenAI has raised $11 billion in a new funding round that values the company at $1.25 trillion, Bloomberg reports, citing sources. The round has not yet closed: according to the publication, it could reach about $20 billion in the coming weeks. In September, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was aiming to raise $30 billion. The amounts now being discussed are well below that target.

The round is not yet complete

The $11 billion is part of a larger, ongoing round. A Bloomberg source expects the deal to close in the coming weeks, with total funds raised potentially reaching about $20 billion.

In late September, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI intended to raise $30 billion. The estimates now being reported are therefore significantly below the initial target. TechCrunch requested comment from OpenAI and said it would update its story if the company responded.

OpenAI and Anthropic valuations

The news came hours after Bloomberg reported that Anthropic could potentially go public. According to the publication, some potential stock buyers believe the OpenAI rival could be valued at as little as $1.1 trillion. About a month ago, investors were reportedly expecting a $2 trillion valuation.

OpenAI had previously indicated that it might hold an initial public offering this year, but later postponed its plans. The company is now expected to go public at some point next year.

Market and political risks

The AI market remains vulnerable to political and regulatory shifts. A decisive Democratic win in the US midterm elections and voters’ sharply negative views of data centers have heightened concerns among market participants. Many fear the industry could face new restrictions in the future.

Dataist’s take: OpenAI’s $1.25 trillion valuation does not yet mean the company has raised its full target amount. The round remains open, and the final total could fall well short of the $30 billion goal. Plans to go public are also affected by uncertainty around data centers and potential regulation.
