OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people weekly

OpenAI said ChatGPT now reaches more than 1.2 billion people a week, putting the chatbot’s weekly audience alongside the scale of a global consumer service. At DevDay, the company also reported more than 35 million weekly users of ChatGPT Work and Codex, and said 2.5 million companies use its products. Those figures make the reach clear; they say less about whether that reach can pay for the infrastructure behind it.

A large audience, a harder question

OpenAI’s growth is being driven by enterprise sales and price competition with Claude and Chinese models. The company has stepped up that strategy with the launch of GPT-6.1-Sol. Codex is also growing quickly, helped by the popularity of the GPT-6 model family.

The numbers span different kinds of use: ChatGPT’s weekly audience is far larger than the combined weekly count for ChatGPT Work and Codex, while the company count points to a substantial business market.

What the figures do not answer is whether growth in users and customers will translate into enough revenue to cover OpenAI’s enormous spending on data centers. I think that is the more consequential measure: audience scale matters, but it is not itself a financing plan.
