A harder insurance market to automate
Vishal Sangkla founded Outmarket in late 2023 after leaving life-insurance distributor Ethos, where he led product. He had previously worked at Facebook and Uber. Ethos went public earlier this year.
Outmarket focuses on commercial insurance, where businesses must choose among different types of coverage, from general liability and workers’ compensation to directors and officers liability. Sangkla said there are more than 250 types of coverage, each with its own applications, paperwork and underwriting process.
The company’s AI automates administrative work so brokers can assess options and recommend policies faster. The intended payoff is more time for work that depends on human contact, such as communicating with clients during emergencies.
Sangkla told TechCrunch that people still sell 95% of insurance policies in the United States and worldwide. That figure points to a large automation opportunity, but it also describes an industry in which relationships remain central to the job.
Funding ahead of proof
Outmarket says it signed up more than 300 insurance agencies in the 14 months after launching its product, including 25% of the 100 largest agencies. The Series B also included Fika Ventures, Permanent Capital Ventures, TTV Capital and Dash Fund. A source familiar with the investment put the company’s valuation at $335 million.
The size of the potential market is substantial: Sangkla said US property and casualty insurance alone represents more than a trillion dollars in annual premiums. But Outmarket is not alone in building AI platforms for insurance brokers; Fulcrum AI and FurtherAI are also competing in the space.
I think the more interesting question is what “faster” means for brokers in practice. The announcement gives agency counts and market size, but no measure of time saved, policy quality or how much of the work still needs human review. If the product mainly moves paperwork along, growth may depend on adoption; if it improves brokers’ recommendations, the value could be harder to replicate. The funding gives Outmarket room to pursue either case, but does not settle which one it has.
