Parents use ChatGPT for school portraits instead of paying photographers

Parents are using ChatGPT to make school-style portraits of their children at home, rather than paying a school photographer. Fast Company reported on social media posts celebrating the savings, including a TikTok video by creator Carly Bond. The approach turns a routine school expense into a trade-off: families can get a polished-looking portrait, but only by uploading a child’s photo to a corporate AI model.

The shortcut

Parents first photograph their children on a phone against a plain wall, then upload the images to ChatGPT with this prompt:

Код
Leave them exactly as they are, but make the photo look like a school portrait.

The model adds a neutral backdrop resembling the style used by mass school photography companies such as Lifetouch. Bond said her family took the photos themselves and used ChatGPT to process them; she was happy with the result. Another TikTok user also approved of the method.

Fast Company also spotted parents using AI to remove watermarks from scans of school-photo proofs, avoiding the fee for having them removed.

The cost beyond the portrait

Both methods mean uploading a child’s image to a corporate AI model. Those images may be used to train future versions of AI tools, and once uploaded, parents cannot get the photos back.

I think the savings look less compelling when the alternative is simply taking a portrait at home without uploading it to ChatGPT. The announcement in these posts is about getting a school-photo look for less; what they leave out is whether that look is worth giving up control of a child’s image. For families trying to save money, the phone camera may be the cheaper choice in more than one sense.
