Reddit’s Huffman says Google AI Mode sends traffic nowhere

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman says Google’s AI Mode sends traffic to neither Reddit nor, as far as he knows, other websites—a shift that could weaken the referral model many online businesses depend on. Reddit says demand for its content has not changed; Google has simply stopped sending users its way. The company is testing a login requirement outside the United States to make data collection harder and reduce its reliance on the open web, while continuing talks with AI providers about licensing its data.

The referral gap

Huffman’s claim is broader than a complaint about Reddit’s own traffic. If Google’s AI Mode answers queries without sending users to the sites behind those answers, publishers and other businesses may lose a route to audiences even when interest in their content remains steady.

Reddit has already had a profitable data deal with Google. That does not settle whether it will sign new licensing agreements with AI providers: negotiations are ongoing, and the company’s next move remains unclear.

Less reach, deeper engagement

Reddit is testing a login requirement outside the US, aiming to make data collection harder and reduce its dependence on the open internet. Huffman frames the trade-off as less reach in exchange for deeper engagement.

I think the unresolved issue is whether licensing can make up for lost referrals. A profitable deal with Google shows that Reddit’s data has commercial value, but the announcement gives no indication that licensing revenue can replace the audience Google used to send.

For any business reliant on Google referrals, Reddit’s experience is a warning about a system-level risk: demand can hold steady while the channel that delivers visitors disappears.
