The AI language is broad by design
Xi described the United States and China as having a shared historical responsibility as the leading countries in AI. Both, he said, have the capabilities and the responsibility to direct AI’s development toward the benefit of people.
He also said AI development should remain under human control and serve society’s well-being. Those principles are difficult to dispute, but they leave the practical questions untouched: whose controls, which standards, and how either government would respond when national interests conflict with public safeguards.
Trump’s inclusion of AI among the summit’s main topics gives the technology a place in the wider US-China relationship, alongside security and trade. The remarks so far do not indicate a specific AI agreement.
Friendship against the negotiating record
Xi framed cooperation and conflict as a shared calculation: China and the United States are closely intertwined, cooperation will benefit both countries, and conflict will cause losses for both. He also expressed hope that Chinese companies in the United States would receive fair treatment.
I think the contrast in the opening statements is more revealing than the language of friendship. Trump is presenting the relationship through trust between leaders; Xi is presenting it through mutual exposure to the costs of confrontation. Those are compatible messages at a podium, but they point to different standards for judging progress.
No quick agreement is expected between the world’s two most influential powers. The announcement is also quiet about the terms of the trade truce and about how Taiwan, AI, and China’s support for Iran and Russia’s war against Ukraine will be handled. For now, the summit has produced a cordial frame around disputes whose substance remains unresolved.
