Walmart opens a controlled shopping route for AI agents

Walmart is opening its shopping services to approved AI agents through a new gateway, while Amazon has begun blocking purchases made this way. The move puts Walmart on the other side of a growing divide in online retail: whether agents should be kept out or given a controlled path to shop for customers. Walmart says its system will let agents find products and place orders without direct access to customers’ personal data or purchase histories.

A controlled route to checkout

The gateway, called Agent Gateway, is an MCP server that connects approved agents to Walmart’s services using the Model Context Protocol, created by Anthropic. Agents will be able to search Walmart’s online catalog and buy items on a customer’s behalf. The system will also support shopping at Sam’s Club, Walmart’s warehouse store.

Walmart has already announced work with Meta’s Muse and integrations with popular AI apps, including ChatGPT and Gemini. President and CEO John Furner described the broader effort on Wednesday at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco: Walmart is preparing for a future in which AI agents become a familiar way to shop.

The company is also building controls around what agents do:

Customers will be able to see agent purchases separately from their own orders.
They can require approval for every transaction or set a spending limit.
Agents will be restricted to the customer’s stated intent and will not get access to payment details.
Walmart says agents will receive only the information needed for the task; those that violate its terms can be blocked.

Separate profiles, ordinary returns

Walmart plans to begin rolling out Agent Profiles next month. Customers will create a separate profile for each agent in their Walmart account, set its rules or spending limit, and remove it whenever they want. The feature will be available to all Walmart account holders; Walmart+ is not required.

The company compares an agent profile to adding another user to a credit card: transactions are visible separately and spending can be limited. Profiles are created during the first purchase through Agent Gateway with the customer’s chosen agent, then linked to the Walmart account.

Agent purchases will follow Walmart’s standard return rules, including when an agent does something the customer did not intend. That is a meaningful boundary: the controls may limit what an agent can do, but they do not remove the consequences of a mistaken order.

The risk Walmart leaves with shoppers

Walmart’s contrast with Amazon is clear. While some online retailers, including travel and booking services, are closing their sites to agents, Walmart is trying to admit them under rules it controls. My read is that the gateway is less a vote of confidence in autonomous shopping than an attempt to define the terms on which it can happen.

What I’d want to know is how Walmart will judge whether an agent stayed within a customer’s intent, especially when the order itself is valid under the normal return policy. Spending limits and separate histories make activity easier to monitor; they do not settle who bears the cost when an agent misunderstands the task. Walmart is opening the door, but its rules leave customers responsible for what comes through it.
