Anthropic has fewer junior technical staff and more meetings

Anthropic’s workforce is changing alongside its use of Claude: the share of junior technical employees has fallen, while employees spend more time in meetings. The company says AI has helped it produce more code, close more sales and process more contracts. Its experience offers a view of how work may shift in organizations built around AI—but Anthropic cautions that more output does not necessarily mean better work or greater business impact.

Fewer junior employees

Since the start of 2025, junior employees’ share of Anthropic’s technical teams has dropped from 21% to 14%. Among new technical hires, the decline was steeper: from 27% to 9%.

Technical teams have also shrunk as a share of the company overall, from 61% to 56%. Anthropic attributes that shift to business functions growing as the company expands, and to coding tools that let employees without technical specializations build software themselves.

Anthropic argues that its own work, deeply reorganized around AI, could offer clues about how AI changes hiring and the organization of work. That is a limited lens: the company says other organizations may not adopt AI as broadly or in the same way.

Claude changes the workday

In an April 2026 survey, 27% of Anthropic employees said Claude had made them more productive. Another 20% said their work had shifted from doing tasks themselves to managing several Claude instances.

One engineer compared the experience to looking after children: each needs attention, and several Claudes can demand it at once. The report suggests that human attention and the ability to judge results are becoming constraints. Claude can produce a large volume of text; people still have to read and organize it.

Anthropic also reports more output per employee: more code, more sales closed by each sales manager, and more contracts processed. But the company says more code does not necessarily mean higher quality or a more visible business impact. It has found no evidence that code quality has declined.

More meetings, not fewer

Calendar data show employees now spend 20% more time in meetings than a year ago. For technical employees, the increase is 16%. Anthropic connects the rise to the role of trust and accountability between people; employees have repeatedly described face-to-face coordination as necessary.

I think the striking tension is that AI is shifting work in two directions at once: fewer junior hires in technical teams, and more human coordination around the work that remains. Anthropic reports productivity gains, but its own account leaves open how much of the added output becomes better products or business results.
