A false claim, a slur or a damaging rumor can turn a small post into a public crisis. Gudea says its AI can help organizations see that escalation coming: instead of counting mentions, hashtags and views, it tracks who is shaping a discussion, how information moves and where a story may lead. The company monitors more than 500 large and niche sites and platforms, including X, Reddit and TikTok. Its pitch is that organizations need to understand not just that attention is rising, but why.
From monitoring to intervention
Gudea presented its mission onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026’s Startup Battlefield on Wednesday afternoon. CEO and founder Keith Presley argued that large companies do not yet know what they can do in advance to protect their reputations and brands. Many communications, public relations and marketing executives, he said, still rely on tools that show only hashtag and view counts.
Presley founded Gudea in 2023 with Jonathan Sperber and James Tominy. The company grew out of a gap the team encountered while working on online information campaigns: existing tools did not show how information actually traveled between people, groups and platforms.
The team’s earlier work began with the George Washington Initiative, a nonprofit formed after the 2020 election. It adapted methods used by the intelligence community overseas to disrupt online networks associated with al-Qaeda and ISIS for domestic information campaigns. Gudea emerged from the team’s effort to identify where campaigns take shape and interrupt the paths by which their ideas reach wider audiences.
The market Gudea sees
Gudea has nearly 40 customers, three years after its founding. Presley said they include a telecommunications company and a Fortune 50 retailer, “one of the largest AI labs in the world” and “one of the largest music groups in the world,” as well as public relations and crisis communications agencies and government departments.
Presley sees generative AI as a reason demand for Gudea’s technology is growing. The tools have sharply reduced the effort and cost of producing content and coordinating online campaigns: work that once required a large organization can increasingly be done by one person with a laptop and suitable software.
The company’s own figures suggest how much its view of the threat has changed. Presley said that when the team began work in 2021, and incorporated in 2023, it found signs of inauthentic activity in about one case in four. Now, he said, those signs appear in about nine cases out of ten.
Gudea plans to make its analysis more specific. One major project is geolocating narratives: Presley said the company plans to launch the technology next year, allowing it to identify where discussions are happening down to a city block. It also wants to give customers greater access to the tools behind its analysis, including a way to test an advertising campaign with Gudea’s AI model before launch and assess whether the strategy could lead to negative consequences.
Last week, Gudea announced a $7 million seed round, co-led by Mudita Venture Partners and Silicon Road Ventures, bringing its total funding to about $15 million.
What the pitch leaves open
I think the more consequential claim is not that Gudea can detect a surge, but that it can explain who is driving it and where it may go. That is a different promise from social monitoring—and a harder one to verify from the announcement alone. The company describes its coverage, customer base and planned features, but gives no measure of how often its analysis correctly identifies a developing crisis or changes a customer’s response.
That gap matters as Gudea moves from monitoring toward intervention. A neighborhood-level map or a pre-launch campaign check could make its analysis more actionable, but the announcement does not say how customers will distinguish an early warning from noise. Gudea is betting that knowing how a story travels is enough to help organizations act before it becomes a crisis; whether the warning arrives early and reliably enough is the test.
