OpenAI is building a humanoid robot, and Sam Altman believes everyone will have one eventually. Altman says infrastructure and working manufacturing have to come first, and that the company does not intend to stop at human-shaped machines — robots of other forms are in scope too. What OpenAI has not named is a delivery timeline, a manufacturing partner, a target unit count, or a prototype. What it has is a job board.
At the end of May, OpenAI had 11 open robotics roles in San Francisco. It now has 19. The disciplines listed are actuators, electromagnetic and mechanical design, printed circuit boards, thermal design, device software, prototyping, procurement and inventory management. Two of those eight are supply chain functions. None of them are research.
The move makes life harder for the robotics companies that expected to buy or license their intelligence rather than build it. That market already has several suppliers: Nvidia's GR00T, Google's Gemini Robotics running on Apptronik, Boston Dynamics and Franka platforms, and Skild. A model vendor that also ships hardware is competing with its own customers, and every hardware company evaluating OpenAI now has to price that in.
OpenAI has been on the other side of this trade before. It put $675 million into Figure AI in a 2024 round. A year later the two ended their partnership, with Figure AI choosing to integrate AI and hardware vertically. The roles are now reversed: the company that lost a hardware partner to vertical integration has decided to integrate vertically itself.
The open question is which half of the problem is actually binding. Gill Pratt of Toyota Research Institute has said that robotics has solved only the fast, reflexive half. Capital is behaving as though the other half is the scarce one — Skild AI raised $1.4 billion in January at a valuation above $14 billion, Google DeepMind released Gemini Robotics 2 on 30 July, and Nvidia published an open reference design for a humanoid on a Unitree chassis on 31 May. That last one matters more than its date suggests: Nvidia gave away the body so it could sell the brain.
The counter-argument is that the body is the bottleneck. Tesla began Optimus production in Fremont around August with no customer deliveries. Elon Musk conceded that the robots were not doing useful work in Tesla's own factories and that the plan for roughly 10,000 deliveries during 2025 was missed. McKinsey puts actuators at 40–60% of a robot's bill of materials. China controls about 69% of rare earth mining and roughly 90% of magnet processing — which is to say it controls the input to the single most expensive component.
The shipment data points the same way. Humanoid deliveries in the first half of 2026 came to roughly 19,100 units, up 272% year on year. More than 97% of them came from Chinese suppliers.
Here is what I think the hiring list tells you. OpenAI is not staffing a robotics research lab; it already has the research. It is staffing a hardware company — actuators, PCBs, thermals, prototyping, purchasing, stock control. That is a bet that the intelligence is closer to solved than the manufacturing, which is the opposite of the bet the funding rounds are making, and it puts OpenAI into the half of the problem where China holds 69% of the mine output, 90% of the magnet processing and 97 of every 100 units shipped. Going after the hard half is defensible. Going after the hard half with no named partner and no announced volume is a research programme wearing an industrial costume.
The absence worth dwelling on is the manufacturing partner. Timelines slip and prototypes get revealed when they are ready, but in a market where 97% of shipped units originate with Chinese suppliers, who builds the thing is not a detail left for later — it is the announcement. OpenAI has said nothing about it.
Figure AI walked away from OpenAI because it wanted to own both halves. OpenAI's answer is to own both halves as well. The difference is that the second half is not something you can hire your way into from San Francisco; it has to be bought, and the people selling it are already shipping 19,100 robots a year to everyone else.
