Reddit shifts toward login-first access as search referrals fall

Reddit is moving toward a login-first experience as search referrals decline, a shift that could protect its audience while giving advertisers more data to target. The company will test the change in selected markets outside the US in the fourth quarter; it has not said when it might reach users worldwide. Reddit says people will still be able to view its homepage without signing in and that anonymous browsing is not going away.

Search is becoming a weaker front door

Reddit’s worldwide daily active users were nearly flat quarter over quarter at 130.3 million in the third quarter. In the US, daily users fell from 53.2 million in the second quarter to 50.7 million in the third, a 2% decline year over year.

The pressure comes from a broader shift: AI summaries can answer questions without sending people to a site, and Google’s familiar ten blue links are drawing less traffic. Google’s own revenue has also been affected.

For Reddit, the scale of the audience makes the change consequential. In October, search referrals fell by more than a million visits a week on average. The company warned that if the trend continues, daily users could decline by a low double-digit percentage by next quarter. A 10–12% drop would put the audience at about 115–117 million, down from 130.3 million in the third quarter.

More value from each user

Despite slower audience growth, Reddit is making more money from the people it has. Revenue rose 53% year over year to $895 million, above Wall Street expectations of about $875 million. Net income increased 74% to $283 million.

Advertising revenue rose 54% to $847 million.
Other revenue, including AI data licensing, grew 35% to $48 million.
Average revenue per daily user in the US climbed 53% to $13.82, despite the 2% decline in users.
Worldwide average revenue per daily user rose 36% to $6.87.

A login-first experience could lift those figures further. Signed-in users share more information about their interests and behavior than people who arrive from search without an account, helping Reddit personalize ads. The same signals could also shape recommendations, surface communities and prompt users to vote, comment and join discussions.

That effort connects to Reddit’s new algorithmic “For You” feed, announced the day before. It will mix posts from communities a user follows with other material selected around their interests.

The trade-off Reddit has not resolved

Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman said on the company’s site that changing access would be a major shift for someone whose life has been tied to the open internet. He also said he believes it is right for both the platform and the business.

The rollout will start with tests in selected markets outside the US during the fourth quarter. Reddit has not given a timetable for a global launch and says access to the homepage without an account will remain important. It is also reworking incognito mode, and says anonymous browsing will remain available.

I think the central tension is not whether Reddit can collect more useful signals from signed-in users; it is how much of the open web it can close off without making discovery harder. Huffman has acknowledged that the boundary between signed-in and signed-out use still raises open questions. Reddit is moving ahead before it has publicly answered them, betting that better personalization and ad targeting can offset the loss of search-driven reach.
