TikTok brings AI shopping help and one-tap checkout to its feed

TikTok is adding a conversational AI shopping assistant and one-tap checkout, bringing product questions and purchases into the same app. The assistant can answer questions about product features, delivery, sizing and availability, while remembering a shopper’s preferences during a conversation. Checkout lets users buy from a brand directly in the For You feed, the app’s main algorithmically curated video stream. Together, the features extend TikTok’s shopping push beyond its dedicated marketplace.

From discovery to checkout

TikTok describes Shopping Assistant as an agent that helps people find and buy products. The company says it can understand the context of a conversation and retain a user’s needs and preferences throughout it.

The new payment feature reduces the path from seeing a product to buying it: a user can purchase from a brand in the For You feed with one tap.

The combination gives TikTok a role across more of the shopping journey. Users can discover a product, ask about it and complete a purchase without leaving the app. That could increase transactions on the platform; TikTok also appears to want product questions answered inside its app rather than through external AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The features are being developed with commerce platforms and payment services, including:

Salesforce
Shopify
Shoplazza
Stripe

A broader commerce play

TikTok Shop has been the company’s main e-commerce tool so far. The new features extend shopping tools into other parts of the app, particularly the For You feed, rather than keeping commerce in a separate marketplace.

TikTok’s own report on economic impact, published last week, said activity on the platform helped businesses in the US generate $81 billion in GDP. Another 54 million Americans said they had bought a product after seeing it in a TikTok video.

TikTok Shop launched in the US in September 2023. Research firm eMarketer estimates that it generated about $15.8 billion in US sales in 2025, roughly 18% of the country’s social commerce market.

The question behind the launch

The sales figures give TikTok a reason to make buying easier, but they do not show whether people will want an AI assistant in the shopping flow. I think the more important test is whether it can offer useful answers without making product discovery feel like a checkout funnel. TikTok is trying to join recommendation, advice and payment in one place; the balance between help and selling will shape whether that feels like a service or simply a more efficient route to a transaction.
